Marv Dunphy

Student athlete (volleyball)

In 1972, Marvin (Marv) Dunphy was recruited for the volleyball team from Pierce College, where he had been team captain.1 Dunphy's first game as a Wave took place November 25, 1972,2 a 2-2 tie against LA Valley College that had to end early so the basketball game scheduled after it could begin on time.3

Dunphy went on to coach volleyball at Pepperdine beginning in 1977 and lasting for several decades. He also had success as the head coach of the US national men's volleyball team, winning an Olympic gold medal at the 1988 summer Olympics in Seoul. Dunphy is a legend in the volleyball world, and he will be remembered as one of the greatest figures in the history of Pepperdine athletics.
